Getting a job with an associate degree in computer science when I already have a bachelor degree in marketing?
I received a bachelor of Science degree in Marketing two years ago. After I graduate I realize this wasn't the right career for me, so I decided to pursue an associate of science degree in computer programming. I would like to know: 1) what kind of job can I get with just an Associate Degree in computer programming? I don't plan of getting a BS in computer science. 2) How will having a bachelor degree affect an employer̢۪s perception of me?

Is a computer science degree respected in the finance field like math or physics?
What degree requires more analysis and crtical thinking math, computer science or physics?

that's easy ....all of them
2
they are abt the same in analysis and critical thinking, but a comp science degree is more respected in my view.
3
Well im doing a computer science degree and it involves math. Im sure it involves physics, but not so far, as im in year 2. My best guess would computer science because it has all of them. But in all honest it is just a wild guess. sorry then!
4
My answer is similar to the rest: All of them are respected and require similar critical thinking skills. However, Math and CS might be more useful in finance just for the emphasis on math and the use of computers in finance. In fact, being able to write your own code to create models would be an asset. I would suggest using two of them for a major/minor, as you'll need a minor if you major in math or physics; not sure about CS. Any of the three would be a good major (pick what you're most interested in), and supplement with a math or CS minor.

Alot. Expect to know Calculus level stuff at the bare minimum if you want to be involved in programming back-end stuff for software. Computing jobs like IT and the like - you will probably be fine with less but you want to be a guru at math and pc's if you are doing anything coding related.
2
Well my mate did computer science and he had to study a lot of subjects in maths. Calculus triganometry and geometry etc... Basically almost half of subjects you need to complete are to do with maths.

Where can I find information about what a computer science degree can offer as far as jobs go?
Looking for types of jobs, stability of job, pay of job, and demand of job that a computer science degree offers. Don't know if there is a site that can give me some of this info and would love information from anyone that has a computer science degree that is working. thanks

The most common are software developer, tester, database admin, network admin, help desk and management. Your best bet is to do some searching on monster.com or workopolis.com - you'll see tons of job listings, degree requirements, and some list the salary.

Feasible to go after a computer science degree
Feasible to go after a computer science degree?
I still have some time before I choose, but I was wondering - is it possible for me to go after a computer science degree in college if I have very little experience beforehand? My high school doesn't offer computer science courses, and I don't feel like I've learned much past the basics on my own, so would I be able to keep up in college?

Sure. That's what school if for!!! You might have to take some prerequisite classes but I doubt it. I'm going for Telecommunications and I don't think I'll fall behind. I've known some people that don't really seem too bright and they got their degrees! Go for the gold!!! Good luck.
2
Yes, it is feasible. If you are still in high school, do an internet search about computer camps. Sometimes, colleges and universities have some programs like that for high school students. Another thought would be to enroll in a computer class at a local community college. Of course, you could also check to see about doing an online computer course. I would recommend the introductory computer course or something similar through a community college or a 4-year college/university.

Is Memorial University of Newfoundland good for a BSc Computer Science Degree?
I am residing in a Middle East country, studying Application Development at a Canadian College. I applied to Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) for a degree in Computer Science. But I am not sure if it is really worth studying there because I didn't get positive reviews for MUN. Please advice me if MUN degrees in Computing are worth within Canada??

Memorial is a completely valid university and your degree will be a worthwhile one. It is not one of the highly ranked universities and is not known for any strength in computer science. But it will be a valid degree and yes everyone in the country has heard of Memorial.
2
Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada, offering more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Memorial has four unique campuses, each with its own flavour. Canada does not offer a ranking system for its 60+ publicly funded universities. So, there are no highly ranked universities in Canada, they are all the same and will give the same quality of education. When selecting a university it is recommended that students research their options and choose a university which offers them the things they feel are most valuable in a university education. This may include factors such as the availability and focus of academic programs, location (rural or urban), student support services, community support and friendliness.

Need suggestions for jobs in guitar that require or help having a computer science degree?
For my computer science class, we are required to find a job in one of our passions that require or is beneficial to have a computer science degree, my passion is guitar, does any one know if there are any guitar technician jobs, or recording, or anything along the lines, pretty broad ideas are OK, just as long as guitars or a band or something is involved.

Maybe programming the the CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines that are used to make most guitar bodies. So you could be working for Fender, Gibson, etc. Maybe do some searches on "programming CNC machines" for more details.

which is better for a second bachelor degree: electrical engineering, computer science or economics
which is better for a second bachelor degree: electrical engineering, computer science or economics?
I will get my bachelor of science in mathematics this month. however, i still don't feel satisfied enough. I never really got that much pleasure or excitement in studying math. So i'm deciding to do a second bachelor of science degree. Which of the three is most exciting and has very good career outlook if combined with a math degree? -- Computer science, electrical engineering or economics.

I like CS. Great job prospects at the moment. But I would do a Masters - cheaper and to a higher standard. Thanks Bill
2
I am an engineer and I see a lot of high paying jobs for electrical engineers and not enough people to fill them
3
Computer science for sure. It is the wave of the future. Computers are still in their infancy and will be around for many hundreds of years only to progesss with time.
4
electrical has high scope while in economics u don't have to work hard yet i will suggest u computer science because its interesting and its demand never finishes u will be satisfied .
5
I would go for Computer Science. Computer Science is a ton of fun. To me it's the way math can be fun. Real time applications and real life situations, it's way cool. If you are business inclined maybe even think about Information Systems. Between Computer Science and Information Systems, with Information Systems you don't get the hard-weight hardware stuff that CS has. You'd end up with a very strong business and programming background. Hope it helps :)
6
EE. Computer science is a vocational course. Economics is a very sustainable post grad interest. Get the EE.
7

If you have a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be ahead of the masses when it comes to searching for jobs. My mate has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, eventually he went in a completely different direction, he earns his keep from Google alone. Have a look at the site below.
2
Absolutely. How about a major in computer science with a minor in criminal justice? Maybe consider taking some forensic psychology classes as well. Take the classes you like and remember that your degree does not directly predict what job you will have. Its arbitrary, and you seem like you are in the right range for what you are considering. Good luck.

all of them are good. I'd talk to a recruiter dude. You can become an officer doing anything with a degree. You have a lot of options. My opinion is learn something else while you're in there and continue your education. that way you learn two things. Like have a job that doesn't involve computers.
3
Become an Officer, they get paid 40%-60% more than the enlisted do. If you want to travel, the Navy will be great, the Air Force would be your next bess bet. Then Army, finally USMC. I would talk to recruiters from the AF branch and ask what they have to officers with degrees in science.

There are seven CAC/ABET-accredited schools offering Computer Science in New Jersey. None is "private" (for-profit). Montclair State University's degree in "Professional Computing" might be closest to what you want. New Jersey Institute of Technology's BA (yes, BA) degree in Computer Science is less theoretical and math-oriented than most.

Yes but you must understand that you also need to be certified or chances of getting any job in the field will be slim and none. It is best to start with your A+ and your Network+. These certifications are what gives you the hands on training employers are looking for. Go to QuickCert.com and you can get alot of information on careers and courses needed to get certified. A degree will just not get you anywhere and I doubt your school will tell you this. I work in IT and believe me I know. Anyways check out the website and there are plenty of jobs in the IT field that are better than programming!!

Just to throw some ideas into your head: if you have good grades, you could always try getting into law school.

computer science degree worth getting for web development
computer science degree worth getting for web development?
I've read on the internet about how outdated our computer science curriculum is here in America. With new web technologies coming out so fast, is it even wroth the cost to obtain an undergraduate degree in computer science to program a professional database backed website? This website has general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'computer software engineers and computer programmers', 'computer scientists' (may need a doctorate to become a 'scientist') or such. How about also talking with a student advisor at the local community college or university.

I have started a Computer Science degree in ireland and not sure what ill end up doin web, video etc. You would be getting the degree for employers mostly and learning how everything on the backend works. As for all the new technologies on the web it would be up to you to pick the ones you want to learn about in your own time, tutorials etc Have to ask yourself if you even intend to work for someone else or for yourself? Would you need a degree if thats the case?

Would you need a degree if thats the case?

whew, pretty wide open question. so here's a wide open answer: whatever you're interested in, there are computers involved in making the work easier/quicker/cheaper. The traditional route in a CS degree is that you'd be interviewing with all kinds of companies during your final year in school, go on some job interviews, and get a couple offers. The funner way is to get with some other computer geeks at school and start writing something cool and see if there's any money to be made from it.

What do I need to be prepared for a computer science degree
What do I need to be prepared for a computer science degree?
I am currently 16, and going to be a junior in high schol. I want to get a degree in computer science in college. I am currently learning the programming language C#, but what else could I read up on/study to get myself better prepared for college (I know that it's a bit early, but i would like to get a headstart)?

I'm 17 and going into CS also. You should take advantage of the AP Computer Science AB course if it is offered at your school- this upcoming school year is the last year the course will be offered before it is merged with the A course. Speaking as someone who got a 5 on the AP Computer Science AB exam and as a fellow programmer- it's an *awesome* class if you have a good teacher. You should also consider studying common algoithms and efficiencies of different proccesses used in programming- maybe learn a new language as well. I've learned C++ and Java (and HTML, but that doesn't really count, lol) and plan to learn Perl (supposedly it's easy, you can follow a lesson to learn in 21 days). The point is you want to start learning the general concepts of programming but also the specific execution in varied programming languages. More emphasis on the first part though. Good luck!!

Criminal Justice degree with my Computer Science Degree for entry in to FBI
| Criminal Justice degree with my Computer Science Degree for entry in to FBI? I currently have a Computer Science degree and would like to become a Special Agent in the FBI. Would an additional degree in Criminal Justice be beneficial to me? If not, is there any other education that I should complete to reach this goal? Thanks in advance for your input. Law Enforcement & Police - 4 Answers Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions : 1 Yes a degree in Criminal Justice would be helpful, so would completing the Police Academy, and courses in psychology and forensics. Good Luck to you... 2 No. The FBI actually looks down on a cj degrees. So do most police department academy instructors. Your computer science helps. for a real list from the FBI go to http://www.fbijobs.gov/1112.asp I'm surprised that a computer savvy person who wants to be and investigator could not find real info like this quickly. Using critical thinking skills needed to be a good investigator you would have realized that advice from sites like this are useless. You would have noted the official site that explains everything. 3 Find another degree besides CJ. If you end up in law enforcement, they teach you everything at the academy that a CJ degree covers. Have you contacted the FBI for input on this? 4 You can recreate the software for fractal compression and decompression used in media scripts. It is a from of brain washing, because words from the same meaning and not association. For example, â€Å“Alice and Pig†are the same. In â€Å“Sin City,†the wave on the guys shirt is â€Å“WAVE ON NAME (as if a) MEAL TEAR censored list of names.†They have been doing the fractal codes for years. Drugs, emotion, and stress can remove the logical association for the fractal association. They use the codes to generate violence in people. There is a simple test to see if a person has been â€Å“brain washed.†First, take them to a location, here FLOOR. Take their first name, such as Fred. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ F FRED L LX, LAZY O OA, Rib, Rob, Robe, O OA, Rib, Rob, Robe R Red Talk to him and see if he says these words. Count the distance between the name, and the location. Add the distance to the next letter. You can use any pairing or grouping of letters from the name. This is fractal code. This is the fractal code used in movies and such. And Bet K A N D A H A R is the fractal code for â€Å“SIN CITY.†I had a very violent childhood and it was these fractal codes used in movies and scripts such as â€Å“Alice In Wonderland†that were to blame. My earliest memory is removing a lock on a door. The war on drugs need these fractal codes in scripts to create violence. Actors know this code too. It is a cash cow for developments. The fractal codes work on stress also. So, drugs are not needed anymore. When a community brings children to watch certain movies, certain members of the community are waiting to see if they will be able to sell a child sooner or later. Officer program with a computer science degree?
My husband has a computer science degree with about 2 years of experience with one of the world's largest information systems centers (Wal-Mart). We are very interested in the officer programs offered by the different branches of the military, but we honestly just don't know that much about them. Which branch would offer good career choices for this degree?

Any branch will take you. For the best training and civilian job translation go Air Force and get into intelligence. Talk to an officer recruiter. Find one near you online at www.airforce.com. I knew an orderly room (administration) Captain once who had a chemical engineering degree. Nice guy. Never asked him if he thought it was a waste for him to have that job tho. good luck

as long as your husband got the degree he can get in as officer, even illegals could be a private, they are taking anyone to go to iraq now

Can a computer science degree get me into video game industry?
video game industry need computer experts so I am wondering does anyone with a computer science degree can pay the bill of being a programmer for the games they make. I am certainly no expert but I don't think that "Computer Science Degree" equates to "Game Programming", unless you know programming stuff... But then again what do I know?

It sounds like you really want to be a game designer, at this point since you are just about to graduate high school you should already be designing your own interactive computer games (everyone else going for a career in game design is) when you go to college you should be at the top of your class (everyone else going for a career in game design is) and should be building a portfolio of games that you can show to prospective employers when you are ready to graduate(everyone else going for a career in game design is). When you graduate you will be one of a million people looking for a job in game design so you better have the best portfolio and greatest personality of all the job seekers. After graduation if you are lucky enough to get a job be ready to work 80-100 hours a week and get paid little (because really there are thousands of geeks out there ready to take your place at the drop of a hat).

No, you cannot become an accountant with only a computer science degree. You wouldn't have the education to pass the CPA exam and get your license. Also, no one would hire you to do their accounting if you have no formal accounting education.

If you are good at math and statistics, there is a lot you can do in the financial world. All of the big banks, investment banks, auditing firms, etc hire tons of CompSci majors to do stuff like develop forecasting models and analyze trends and risk forecasting. If you are still in school, take accounting and a couple of finance classes so you have the basic background. Also a financial derivatives class would help you a lot.

A LOT. Computer Science is a branch of a Mathematics degree, so a lot of math classes are involved (think calculus and above). Any degree you wish to pursue will all involve a ton of study in the college level
2
I hope you love programming because they do a lot of programming and its really time consuming learning codes so hopefully your only taking like 12 units a semester or your really into this stuff or else you will have some difficulties.
3
There are a lot of factors: 1. How many classes are you taking? 2. How good is your grasp for technology (do you have a passion for it?) 3. Is your current job related to technology? You are going to have to think in a different way... depending on the program, you will also have to learn 4 or 5 computer-based languages, and how to think logically, etc. In the beginning, you will spend time changing into that mode of thinking. It may be a good idea to start slow...
4
If you want to do well, you'll have to study an average of 3-5+ hours for each course per week. Hours of study may vary with your aptitude for math...

Is it necessary to know any programming before starting a Computer Science degree?
I know a lot about computers (I'm typing this from Linux, that should say something). I know a lot about fixing, troubleshooting, networking, etc. but I do not know any programming. No, you can take introductory computer science. But it's odd that someone who learned Linux hasn't bothered learning Perl or Python - or hasn't shown an interest in learning it. It would definitely help your application for a computer science major, and it would help your major as well.
2
Usually not, unless you're looking at a tech/trade school. Most liberal arts colleges have majors that assume you have no background in the subject and will be starting from scratch. Any experience you have beforehand is definitely a plus, but in most cases, wouldn't be required.
3
While prior knowledge of programming is not an eligibility criterion for a computer science degree, it may help you understand programming concepts better. That being said, if you have a passion to work with computers as well as an above average numeric and analytical ability, you may not find it too difficult to stay on top of your coursework. I have heard that the computer science program offered by California College San Diego provides the practical and theoretical knowledge you̢۪ll need to work as a programmer, database manager, or network administrator in an organization.

You can get a job in pretty much anything computer related, it helps if you find something you like and specilize in that. If you want to really get specilized you can go on after your undergrad, as undergrad basically gives you an overview of the field of all the different possibilies of what you can do with the degree. Here are some of the things you can do with this degree, some may need additional schooling but as you can see there are a lot of speclities!! Figure out your favorite in college and go from there! Artificial Intelligence -- Develop computers that simulate human learning and reasoning ability. Computer Design and Engineering -- Design new computer circuits, microchips, and other electronic components. Computer Architecture -- Design new computer instruction sets, and combine electronic or optical components to provide powerful but cost-effective computing. Information Technology -- Develop and manage information systems that support a business or organization. Software Engineering -- Develop methods for the production of software systems on time, within budget, and with few or no defects. Computer Theory -- Investigate the fundamental theories of how computers solve problems, and apply the results to other areas of computer science. Operating Systems and Networks -- Develop the basic software computers use to supervise themselves or to communicate with other computers. Software Applications -- Apply computing and technology to solving problems outside the computer field - in education or medicine, for example.
I have been awarded a scholarship to major in computer science. Im just wondering what kind of job you would get with a computer science degree.

Which is a better choice? A General Computer Science Degree or Network Systems Administration and Support
Which is a better choice? A General Computer Science Degree or Network Systems Administration and Support?
I am enrolled in college and I need help with deciding what associate degree will be most beneficial to me. I would like a career in computer science. Specifically, I would like to be a systems/database analyst or a network engineer or possibly a web administrator. However, I am uncertain of the possible downfalls that may effect me if I choose to specialize within computer science. I need some feedback on which degree would be a better choice; a general associate degree in Computer Science or an associate degree in Computer Science-Network Administration and Support?

Both. You have a better chance of being hired.

I think you should seriously consider going past an associates degree. If the only choice is between the two, I think a general degree in Computer Science would best serve you. This will give you some background in both how networks communicate, but also a baseline of programming. You should learn a few OS's. Many large companies use UNIX. You can try Linux for free and get a feel for the file structure and how databases work. Good luck. Also with computer sciences, it is a good major to pursue online.

Can i become a software engineer with a computer science degree
Can i become a software engineer with a computer science degree?
Like I go to the University of Waterloo and am going for a computer science major...and looking to take a software engineering option. However doing it this way doesn't make me a canadian lisenced engineer. Does that mean I can't get a software engineering job?. How will the companies know that I have a software engineering option to my computer science degree.

Most companies don't care about the PE license. You will have no trouble finding a job as a software engineer with a computer science degree. They will know you have the software engineering option when you add that detail to your resume.

I found a list below. The majority of people who I graduated with went into software development - at least at first. From there, we've branched out into strictly computer areas, but also into project management, and management in general. You don't need a comp sci degree to work with technology - it should be noted.

Video games these days are a very complicated field. Big game studios do look for programmer and people with CS degrees, but they only need a few for every project. What they are looking for mainly are artists to design and animate characters and levels. You can use a CS degree but you should look for a smaller company.

Can I start a computer science degree at the graduate level
Can I start a computer science degree at the graduate level?
I have a degree in economics, but I'm considering switching careers and I'm thinking about computer science. I've never taken a formal comp sci class (but I've tinkered around with code). Will some programs allow me to start a degree without prereqs? If not, would the amount of prereqs I would have to take be pretty much equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science? (...meaning, I pretty much should go back and start again at the bachelor's degree level, right?)

No, they won't admit you without the prerequisites. They don't start over at the beginning - they start the masters coursework assuming you already took 4+ years of computer science courses. You'll need to take at least the basic prerequisite courses somewhere. You don't need another bachelors, but you do need about a year or more of basic courses.
2
Check with the graduate school regarding the pre-requisites you need and see if you can take them as a temporary non-degree graduate student. If you get A's in those classes, you are likely to be admitted to a master's or Ph.D. program.
3
Yeah, you should go back and take requisite courses for admission, which should take about 1.5-2 years or so (the last two years of undergrad are the main courses). There should be no reason they would accept you as is though, no one would be able to keep up just "starting" at the masters level. It just does not make sense. To be a master in something, you need a basis. This does not have to be a bachelors degree though, but should be coursework.

Where can I get a good computer science degree in NYC?
I want a bachelor degree in computer science. Currently, I'm going for my second year at community college, so I'm going to transfer for junior year to somewhere else. There are places close by but I want to get away for the last two years. What places do you know of that have good degrees, especially for someone who likes putting computers together more than things like programming? Keep in mind that I'm not exactly rich. (: Thanks. And if you could say why the school is good, that'd be awesome.

How could I possibly use a Computer Science degree to get a career in the Aviation field
How could I possibly use a Computer Science degree to get a career in the Aviation field?
I would really like to become a pilot, or at least being regularly involved in a cockpit, but I don't want to let my computer science degree go to waste, with grad school a possibility, is it possible to incorporate my CS degree with planes or aviation in general? If you think I should try grad school, what's the best field of study to accomplish this?

Definitely. I'm from Australia but I just read a story like that last week, from one of our major universities. "Computing to become a Pilot Not many people would expect a computing major student to become an international airline pilot - but that is just what Vic Leung did! After finishing Computer Engineering in 1993, Vic worked for a few years in the IT industry - but his dream was always to fly the skies and see the world from a bird's-eye perspective. In 1995 he gained his private pilot's licence and was then fortunate enough to be selected for the Cadet Pilot program with Cathay Pacific. Cathay preferred applicants who had an engineering degree - particularly in Computing. (Not surprising considering there are over 200 computers on board an Airbus aircraft!) By 1996 Vic was cruising at 40,000 feet and visiting some of the most exotic countries on the earth! " Good luck!!!

Hi You should be able to do that. I believe you can perform some type of programming or engineering work in aviation. Here are some websites from another school that may help you, and they have info about possible careers. http://csm.vu.edu.au/courses/undergraduate/sbca http://www.fmuniv.edu/academic/aviation/compuscience.htm Here is some info about engineering and aviation: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos027.htm I don't know much about applying Computer Science with aviation technology, but I hope this helps you =)

There are a lot of computer science opportunities in the aviation industry. A lot of this will be due to more and more diagnostic being done by computers rather than man hour troubleshooting. The new Boeing 787 is even equipped with blue tooth to send diagnostic reports right to a computer. As for incorporating the CS with a pilot there is always flight simulator design. Which might be the closest you would get to mixing a pilot and CS degree. Outside of aircraft themselves in the coming years there will be the whole reform of the ATC technology. So should be opportunities in that area as well. Although not as closely linked to being a pilot. Good Luck.

I know someone with a computer science degree who is a consultant.
2
You can be a software tester/quality assurance engineer. This is the person who tests the computer code written by the programmers. You can use your knowledge of coding to create automated tests, but that wouldn't have to be 100% of the time. You could test manually some of the time, write test cases and test plans some of the time, etc. A class in QA or testing methods would help, but your computer background might be sufficient. You could work in implementation. When a business installs a major software package like enterprise software or healthcare software, it's a big project taking many months to a year or more. Implementation consultants travel to the client site and install and configure the software according to the customer's needs. They also transfer existing data into the new database and interface the new software with existing applications. Coding may be useful, but it wouldn't be a main part of the job. You could be a business analyst. This is the person who works with the business client to find out their needs, desires and practices so a software package can be customized for them. A little basic business knowledge can help here, and you'll need to be comfortable making presentations and maybe training people. You could go into recruiting for IT, because you know the lingo and the concepts. You could sell b-to-b software packages or go into marketing for IT.
