What type of organizations like Peace Corp exist where I can utilize my computer science degree

What type of organizations like Peace Corp exist where I can utilize my computer science degree?
I have a degree in computer science and math and would like to utilize them to help people. I just don't belong in a cubicle farm and I have a compassion to help people and volunteer. I love to teach too. I was wondering what organizations exist to help me accomplish this goal. Thanks!

For video game programming: Does a Computer Science Degree cover it, or is a specialized degree needed

For video game programming: Does a Computer Science Degree cover it, or is a specialized degree needed?
I'm looking to head into the field, and I've noticed the over-publicized specialty degrees aren't exactly that great. However, they are all related to the Computer Science degree. Should this degree land me the appropriate job, or is a specialized degree necessary?

You need the degree, you need to have played almost every video game since Donkey Kong, you have to know at least 2 high level programming languages and you have to have written some killer games just for the fun of it. And you have to be able to work 90 hours a week for $40,000 a year.

You don't need any degree. Just think of BIll Gates; he dropped out. You just need a creative mind and a good idea of programming..

Is it necessary to know any programming before starting a Computer Science degree

Is it necessary to know any programming before starting a Computer Science degree?
I know a lot about computers (I'm typing this from Linux, that should say something). I know a lot about fixing, troubleshooting, networking, etc. but I do not know any programming. How much programming, if any, should I learn before starting a Bachelor's degree program in Computer Science? And no... I don't want to do CIS because it's business oriented. I hate business related topics!

No, you can take introductory computer science. But it's odd that someone who learned Linux hasn't bothered learning Perl or Python - or hasn't shown an interest in learning it. It would definitely help your application for a computer science major, and it would help your major as well.

Usually not, unless you're looking at a tech/trade school. Most liberal arts colleges have majors that assume you have no background in the subject and will be starting from scratch. Any experience you have beforehand is definitely a plus, but in most cases, wouldn't be required.

While prior knowledge of programming is not an eligibility criterion for a computer science degree, it may help you understand programming concepts better. That being said, if you have a passion to work with computers as well as an above average numeric and analytical ability, you may not find it too difficult to stay on top of your coursework. I have heard that the computer science program offered by California College San Diego provides the practical and theoretical knowledge you’ll need to work as a programmer, database manager, or network administrator in an organization.

You can get a job in pretty much anything computer related, it helps if you find something you like and specilize in that. If you want to really get specilized you can go on after your undergrad, as undergrad basically gives you an overview of the field of all the different possibilies of what you can do with the degree. Here are some of the things you can do with this degree, some may need additional schooling but as you can see there are a lot of speclities!! Figure out your favorite in college and go from there! Artificial Intelligence -- Develop computers that simulate human learning and reasoning ability. Computer Design and Engineering -- Design new computer circuits, microchips, and other electronic components. Computer Architecture -- Design new computer instruction sets, and combine electronic or optical components to provide powerful but cost-effective computing. Information Technology -- Develop and manage information systems that support a business or organization. Software Engineering -- Develop methods for the production of software systems on time, within budget, and with few or no defects. Computer Theory -- Investigate the fundamental theories of how computers solve problems, and apply the results to other areas of computer science. Operating Systems and Networks -- Develop the basic software computers use to supervise themselves or to communicate with other computers. Software Applications -- Apply computing and technology to solving problems outside the computer field - in education or medicine, for example.
