Working as an investment banker is obviously an applauded employment

2
Business degree might help you get your foot in the door. And the computer Science degree, if you put it in the resume right, might help them think that you'd be good at number analyzing. It's really all up to the people hiring. I've known people who have great degrees having to take crappy jobs and people with no degrees get amazing jobs.

3
So you sincerely want to get rich? Many graduates want to be "investment bankers". Few survive the brutal weedout. Unless you specifically go into the back room as a (high paid) "Quant," you'll be in the front peddling dubious securities to unsuspecting suckers by telemarketing. It's not much different from selling used cars.

SME (small to medium sized businesses) are probably your best bet. Companies like that are in every possible type of industry - medical, legal, financial, games, sales, you name it. Best place to find those are through the job board at your university, or monster.com (or similar sites). SMEs hire the majority of developers, contrary to what everyone thinks ...

Federal govts, state govts, energy companies, insurance cmpy, utilities, telephone, manufacturers, railroads, etc. Basically any company that has a computer. And let's face it, what company doesn't have a computer?? Right now, there's not much hiring going on. Or maybe your university has some ties with banks, or bankers & that's why they come to talk. Or maybe they're the only ones hiring right now. By the way, I used to be an IT consultant, and I've worked with most of the afore mentioned business.

I think it will. But don't listen to me I'm not a genius.

2
you only need to spend two more years, if the school you transfer to accept the previous credits.

3
That depends on the class requirements for a Computer Science degree. If you've taken lots of classes that were specific to your CC degree and don't apply to the degree you want where you want to transfer to, yes it will take longer. If you've taken lots of overlapping classes, it won't take much longer.

4
In order to be proficient in computer security, you must be proficient in computer science.

5
Why don't you see a college counselor? The variables are too many to cover adequately here. Any advice you're likely to get will be too general to do you much good.

6
Wow, you're full of questions today! This provides a little more insight into your reason for avoiding CS, so maybe I can address it better. Computer science is a very tough major. Many "traditional" majors at my university had 40-60 hours of required coursework for graduation. The computer science program had 92 hours of required coursework. That being the case, very few students graduated in 4 years. I entered college with 21 credit hours and took 18 and 20 hours of classes (respectively) my last two semesters in order to graduate in 3.5 years without a minor and only a couple electives. Also, many computer science programs have an internship requirement. This can be hard for transfer students expecting to graduate in 2 years because they find themselves applying for internships just a few months after starting the program while others have had 2 years of course work prior to applying for internships. You should be in a better situation in this respect because of your community college concentration, but it might still be hard to graduate in 2 more years. Another barrier you'll face is that many of your credits won't transfer. If you have an associate's degree from an accredited institution, then most colleges will wave your general education (or "liberal arts") requirement. This will save you from having to retake history and other classes that may not directly apply to your degree. Your core programming courses (if you took them) should also transfer. Though you might need to take an extra course if the central programming language is different from what you learned (so if you took C++ and the university is in to Java, they might make you take a "Java as a second language" course). You _might_ also get transfer credit for things like calculus (if you took it). Contact the registrar's office at the university you plan to attend and see if you can meet with someone to discuss what courses might transfer. They should hopefully be able to assist you with this. The bottom line is that CS is a hard degree with a lot of requirements. This is why it's such a useful degree and why you will come out qualified for almost any computer job. You're going to have to work hard and it's probably going to take at least another 3 years of school. But when it comes down to it, you will be well-prepared for any job in the industry, including those in computer security.

3
Well, if you're already in college, your schools website should offer something called (or at least something along those lines) a major track. It will show you what classes to take for your desired major. If you're still confused, go make an appointment with the computer science adviser. They will explain to you in depth what you should take. If you're not in college yet, then the schools you're looking at should still have a page where it shows the classes you'll need to take for that degree. Including pre-reqs. Such as general education classes you need.

4
Computer Science is very theoretical and math-oriented. Perhaps instead you should be looking at Software Engineering Technology.

Well, if you don't have any experience try to get a Help Desk job somewhere where they will pay for you to earn certifications. I received my Computer Science degree almost two years ago and, as entry level Help Desk Analyst, I earn 44k a year salary with just an A+ for a certification. I'm going to be working on getting Microsoft and Cisco certifications to advance my career, hopefully, fast. In conclusion, I suggest getting A+ and Network+ while getting a Computer Science degree (about 2 months studying for each if you read slowly) for much better job prospects when you graduate.

don't overload yourself the first semester-12 to 14 hours max if you are full time and not working. Stay ahead of the game-don't get behind on assignments.--get a calendar and put everything (reading assignments, tests, papers, etc.) on it so everything is in one place. Be sure to read the assigned readings before the lectures. Ask questions Get a study buddy in each class-get together weekly to review material. know your own learning style and know how to maximize it and minimize the negative aspects of it. Be able to touch type. Spend the money to get the tools that will help you do your best. Seek out the campus learning assistance center and see what guidance they can offer.

2
Theoretically, you should have an edge over the younger, more traditional students. As you are more mature and have been working, you should be more able to study on a more consistent basis without slacking off majorly. You also won't have to deal with college's typical 'distractions' for an 18 year old. So you should have the academic part covered. As far as socially, I'm not sure what type of college you're going to. If it's night class with other adults, which I've taken a few of, it will seem just like a job. Little social interaction and just trying to stay awake. If you are going to be taking classes in the day with 18 year old freshman, well that will be MUCH MORE interesting. Good luck. I'm the same age and going back to school too, although for my masters...

it was better if you could say which city or country you are living too, because some universities they have some spots each year for people who had long absence from college.you need to specify them in your city or your country and try to get their application.some of them they want you to write a statement around 500 words about why you wanna do this course and what do you wanna achieve after completing this course,so it s better you prepare yourself from now.it will be helpfull later on if you try to get some courses such as short courses(at college) about computer science before you go to uni if you don't have any experience regarding to this degree from before.besides, they usually ask about the previous places that you have worked before(it's usally in their application)be prepare yourself.they ask you about your high school grades and subjects that you have taken before and so on,try to collect them all from now if you don't have them all...goodluck

I am an environmental science major specializing in GIS/remote sensing. I have heard that learning computer science and programming makes you attractive to employers, but to what extent? It will benefit by giving you greater access to high paying jobs. There are plenty of programmers in the world but fewer with remote sensing and environmental science skills. That diversity of knowledge makes you even more attractive even if you don't actually do any work in those fields. A great number of these jobs start in the 70k range and can quickly advance (in a few years) to over 100k.

Hello...... my thoughts are.... In the "developed" world in which we live it is expected that you must have a certin leval of education in order to find a higher paying job. I have met a few people with limited schooloing who have a high IQ and met highly educated people who well....are not the sharpest tool in the shed. One thing school will give you is the basic knowlage in the field in which you choose to go into. Now what you do with that knowlage is up to you. ...no degree no interview.....C.O's could be/are missing out on some good people with no degree. ...School give you kinda basic training and up to you to develop that. some times we have to do steps 1 2 3 to get to 4 For my self I have been in a number of fields and I have learned knowlage is a good thing....something you onced learned in one field could be used in another. I hope this helps you..best of luck. Gary

I need to know who has a Computer Science degree and how it has worked out for them. As potential employers scout for new "recruits" to employee their company with on campus visits,I would like to know if 48K a year is too low? I have a good friend that was offered 63K, am I being low balled? I live in Florida. (just in case someone says "depends where you live". And to be even more specific, I live in the panhandle. Thank you.

The 48K figure is probably normal for someone with a degree but no experience. My degree is CIS (Computer Information Systems) degree but starting pay should be equivalent. The 63K is great if you can get it but keep in mind that you are lucky to get anything right now. If you got the 63K job expectations might be higher as to what you can do and they might wash you out after a few months or a year. If you hold out for more $$$ you could end up waiting on people at McDonalds. Don't get greedy and blow the chance as this is obviously your first job in this field. In 2-4 years you can survey things and see if you can find a better deal. You will have this job on your resume and can search from a stronger position. There are a number of experienced IT professionals on the street looking for work and you are competing with them. The only reason these companies are giving you the time of day is that they want to get teachable young folks and mold them into company employees that will be around for many years. Weigh this opportunity carefully as it might be the only one you see... Best wishes

2
It is the 21st Century, it would be very useful more and more jobs are involving technology, specifically computers

3
Yes. You can obtain certifications in specific technologies such as SAP or Microsoft or Oracle to make yourself more marketable as a practitioner.

4
If you look at something like medical science, that will be HUGE in computer science. Anything related to health care and computer science, or genetics, or bioinformatics, will be in demand. Its as simple as when they talk about electronic medical records, or realtime compute power - and storage required, for medical imaging. Other fields in science, anything related to the environment for example, always needs simultations in computer science.

5
Computer Science is an incredible major to get into as far as job opportunities exiting college. Graduating from any top 50 school and you'll be inundated with job offers. Graduating from other schools beyond that will be a little harder to find work but you'll get a well paying position eventually. Even with respect to lesser schools, I've never known anyone who graduated with a CS degree and wasn't able to find decent work in the field by the end of year.

The answer is a definite maybe. As a Professor of Business and business owner of over 20 years, and having done lots of hiring over the years, there is and will continue to be a tremendous demand for people with Computer Hardware and Software knowledge regardless of your degree. Remember, that textbooks are at least two years old, after the writing, editing and publishing, so they are by definition obsolete. What about your Professors? Are they working in the field or are the Ivory Tower type, who haven't had a "real job" in twenty years or more? If you have up-to-date knowledge and experience you will definitely be in demand. If you lack experience, go volunteer, do an internship, etc. to gain the experience that will be required of you. As a business owner, I want to know what you can do for me. Do you have your "ticket punched"? That is the degree which will get you through the door. But, can you actually be of use to me and generate more income than you cost? Or, am I going to have to devote lots of hours and lots of money to train you? Who would you rather hire? To summarize: Get up-to-date and Get the Experience! Good Luck!

Anything's possible. However, computer technology is one career track that will always be useful, as long as we continue to use computers. There is no chance in this technological age that computer science degrees will be considered obsolete. Rather, they will be in high demand.

3
of-course there will be ,due to the circumstances of the present IT market almost all the companies are stepping back for new recruitment's ,compared to last few years presently there is only a little chance for new openings so a lot of competition is ahead ,so in-order to come out of the deep waters possessing a comp. sci. deg. is not enough apart from that one should learn new technologies and get acquainted with the new courses and should be ahead of all...

4
I worked at Microsoft on a short term contract gig. The ebb and flow of employees there is not something that predicts the entire future of IT. The situation right now is that there are a lot of IT pros looking for work. Some of these folks have killer resumes and if you were trying to compete against them for the same jobs they would make you look silly. The reality is that most of them are not applying for the same jobs that you would be as a junior entry-level IT person. People are still hiring entry-level staff. Yes the numbers are down, but depending on how long it takes you to finish your degree, the economy and job prospects could look better by then.

The US Air force and a computer science degree

You don't get a degree in the academy. You can get the computer degree, then apply for the academy. Or, you can go to a college with Air Force ROTC, and major in computer science (if they let you do that). Talk to a recruiter for good answers.

2
I guess so.. The academic curriculum provides cadets with a solid foundation appropriate to an Air Force career and the activities of a responsible American citizen. The Academy offers 32 academic majors in technical fields such as astronautical engineering and aeronautical engineering, computer science, space operations and system engineering management. In addition, the school offers non-techincal degrees in fields such as political science, social sciences, English, history and humanities. Minors in foreign language and philosophy are also offered. All cadets may pursue the major and minor of their choice. All cadets must have a major and may choose their courses from more than 500 offered each year.

3
Make sure YOU have the qualifications for the USAF Academy, first!

4
Yes. The Air Force Academy is a college and computer science is a major that is offered. Not too long ago the Air Force added Cyberspace to one of the areas that we focus on so there is definitely a role for computer science majors. If you serve for 20 years and gain a retirement then yes you can still work with whoever you want. You have tons of research you need to do before you join the Air Force or try to apply to the Air Force Academy.

game programming is a type of computer science degree. Comp engineering isnt the same as compsci so dont substitute for that. Anything thats computer science will either say "computer science" in it or "programming" in it.

Is a Computer Science and Information Technology Degree the same thing

Is a Computer Science and Information Technology Degree the same thing?
I know Information Technology is offered through online classes and Computer Science degrees are offered through a traditional college learning setting. I was wondering if there is a difference as far as curriculum.

Information Technolgy is generally the user end of the software.. Computer Technologies woudl be the programmingand hardware end.

2
Usually no. Computer Science involves a lot of programming (different languages such as C/C++, VB.NET, etc.), study of operating systems, compilers, networks, etc. Information Technology, or IT for short, usually involves more of the business aspect of technology. IT Managers manage Programmers (CS people).

3
Computer Science is usually more involved in designing/building computers and software. IT is running networks, security, infrastructure, etc.

4
the Curriculum changes often...but don't do notting on line, U wont learn what U need to no for a good job...take classes in a college setting, because U will have to network very hard to get a job later an.....and the CO will come to the campus to hire you... mostly if U choose and IT degree they will stick U with a tech call center job...so do it right the first time....

5
Computer science = more programming. IT = more computer troubleshooting, networks, hardware and software related.

Getting a job with an associate degree in computer science when I already have a bachelor degree in marketing

Getting a job with an associate degree in computer science when I already have a bachelor degree in marketing?
I received a bachelor of Science degree in Marketing two years ago. After I graduate I realize this wasn't the right career for me, so I decided to pursue an associate of science degree in computer programming. I would like to know: 1) what kind of job can I get with just an Associate Degree in computer programming? I don't plan of getting a BS in computer science. 2) How will having a bachelor degree affect an employer̢۪s perception of me?

Is a computer science degree respected in the finance field like math or physics?
What degree requires more analysis and crtical thinking math, computer science or physics?

that's easy ....all of them

2
they are abt the same in analysis and critical thinking, but a comp science degree is more respected in my view.

3
Well im doing a computer science degree and it involves math. Im sure it involves physics, but not so far, as im in year 2. My best guess would computer science because it has all of them. But in all honest it is just a wild guess. sorry then!

4
My answer is similar to the rest: All of them are respected and require similar critical thinking skills. However, Math and CS might be more useful in finance just for the emphasis on math and the use of computers in finance. In fact, being able to write your own code to create models would be an asset. I would suggest using two of them for a major/minor, as you'll need a minor if you major in math or physics; not sure about CS. Any of the three would be a good major (pick what you're most interested in), and supplement with a math or CS minor.

Alot. Expect to know Calculus level stuff at the bare minimum if you want to be involved in programming back-end stuff for software. Computing jobs like IT and the like - you will probably be fine with less but you want to be a guru at math and pc's if you are doing anything coding related.

2
Well my mate did computer science and he had to study a lot of subjects in maths. Calculus triganometry and geometry etc... Basically almost half of subjects you need to complete are to do with maths.

The most common are software developer, tester, database admin, network admin, help desk and management. Your best bet is to do some searching on monster.com or workopolis.com - you'll see tons of job listings, degree requirements, and some list the salary.

Feasible to go after a computer science degree

Feasible to go after a computer science degree?
I still have some time before I choose, but I was wondering - is it possible for me to go after a computer science degree in college if I have very little experience beforehand? My high school doesn't offer computer science courses, and I don't feel like I've learned much past the basics on my own, so would I be able to keep up in college?

Sure. That's what school if for!!! You might have to take some prerequisite classes but I doubt it. I'm going for Telecommunications and I don't think I'll fall behind. I've known some people that don't really seem too bright and they got their degrees! Go for the gold!!! Good luck.

2
Yes, it is feasible. If you are still in high school, do an internet search about computer camps. Sometimes, colleges and universities have some programs like that for high school students. Another thought would be to enroll in a computer class at a local community college. Of course, you could also check to see about doing an online computer course. I would recommend the introductory computer course or something similar through a community college or a 4-year college/university.

I am residing in a Middle East country, studying Application Development at a Canadian College. I applied to Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) for a degree in Computer Science. But I am not sure if it is really worth studying there because I didn't get positive reviews for MUN. Please advice me if MUN degrees in Computing are worth within Canada??

Memorial is a completely valid university and your degree will be a worthwhile one. It is not one of the highly ranked universities and is not known for any strength in computer science. But it will be a valid degree and yes everyone in the country has heard of Memorial.

2
Memorial University is the largest university in Atlantic Canada, offering more than 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Memorial has four unique campuses, each with its own flavour. Canada does not offer a ranking system for its 60+ publicly funded universities. So, there are no highly ranked universities in Canada, they are all the same and will give the same quality of education. When selecting a university it is recommended that students research their options and choose a university which offers them the things they feel are most valuable in a university education. This may include factors such as the availability and focus of academic programs, location (rural or urban), student support services, community support and friendliness.
